His route? Starting in Geneva, paddling across France via the Rhône and the Loire rivers until reaching the Atlantic Ocean at Saint-Nazaire, then continuing south along the rugged coast. When autumn conditions became too hazardous, he pushed through the stormy Bay of Biscay aboard an old sailing ship. Facing unexpected hurdles like the massive dams on the Rhône and notorious storms at sea, he kept moving forward.
